MBSR Teachers Short Biographies
Jim Colosi is a certified teacher in the eight-week mindfulness-based stress reduction program (MBSR) at the Center for Mindfulness, founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn, at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, Mass. Jim has taught meditation for 30 years in the practicing lineage of Chogyam Trungpa, leading Shambhala Training workshops nationally. He was the Director of the Prison Meditation Program, North Central Correctional Institution, Gardner, MA, from 1995-2000. Prior to becoming an adjunct teacher at the Center for Mindfulness in 2006, he had a 25-year career in strategic marketing and communications, with Hewlett-Packard, Compaq Computer Company and Digital Equipment of Canada.
Karin Kempe MD MPH has been a Family Physician for 30 years and retired mid-2012 from her role as Medical Director of Clinical Prevention Services at Kaiser Permanente Colorado. She has an extensive background in medical group operations, leadership and quality improvement as well as forty years experience in Buddhist meditation practice. She is one of three spiritual directors of the Zen Center of Denver where she teaches Zen Meditation. She participated in the teacher practicum at the Univ. of Mass. in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction in 2005 and since then has taught MBSR to patients and professionals.
Jean Leonard, Ph.D., RYT is a licensed psychologist and a registered yoga teacher in full-time private practice in Boulder. Dr. Leonard has practiced yoga for over 20 years and vipassana meditation since 2003. She studied with the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program at the Duke University Center for Integrative Medicine for 4 years and has taught MBSR for the past 5 years. She has continued to pursue specialized yoga training including yoga for seniors, yoga for cancer and Elemental Yoga, a mind-body approach to yoga and yoga therapeutics, with a specific focus on yoga for anxiety, depression and insomnia. In 2009, she completed an 18-month Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation Training through Spirit Rock Meditation Center and is currently completing Spirit Rock’s Dedicated Practitioners Program.
Peggy Sheehan, MD is a practicing pediatrician in the community with a long standing interest in mind-body medicine. She has practiced meditation for over 20 years and is one of the three spiritual directors of the Zen Center of Denver. In 2005, she participated in the teacher practicum at the University of Mass. in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. She has taught MBSR for Kaiser Permanente for the past 7 years.
Janet Solyntjes, MA, is a senior teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition and Adjunct Professor at Naropa University. A practitioner of mind-body disciplines since 1977, she completed a professional training in MBSR with Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli and an MBSR Teacher Development Intensive at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She leads MBSR courses in residential retreat settings, business places, senior centers, and oncology clinics in the U.S. and internationally.
Dr. John Steele, Ph., Licensed Psychologist and Registered Yoga Teacher, has been practicing yoga and meditation since age 16. He participated in a 7-day professional training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) with Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1999 and a 5-day training in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) from Dr. Zindel Segal in 2003. John is a Naropa Certified Meditation Instructor and Adjunct Professor in the graduate psychology program at Naropa University. He teaches yoga at a number of venues in Boulder and offers individual therapy through his private practice.
